The Mattawan Bands are one of the largest and most successful organizations on campus. In the middle school, due to an overwhelming enrollment, students are placed into two bands in the sixth and seventh grades while the eighth grade band is combined into one ensemble. The high school marching band consists of grades nine through twelve and the high school concert bands are divided in two bands according to grade level. The Concert Band consists of ninth and tenth grade students while the Symphonic Band is made up of eleventh and twelfth grade students.
Each school year, the Mattawan Bands perform numerous concerts at Mattawan and throughout the community. The High School Marching Band, the most visible band, performs at all home football games, several local marching band competitions, the Homecoming Parade, and the MSBOA festival. Concert season begins at the conclusion of football season for the High School. The Middle School students perform at MSBOA district and state festival yearly as well as performing in a concert band setting. The eighth grade band gets the opportunity each May to march in the Mattawan Memorial Day Parade.
In order to broaden the students’ musical education, the band directors encourage high school students to participate in a Jazz Band during the fall for the annual “Jazz Club” put on by the performing arts department. This extra curricular opportunity gives students an opportunity to play in the jazz genre. The seventh grade students are also given the opportunity to spend a few weeks of the last trimester taking a jazz class in the middle school.
A vital aspect behind the success of the band program is the Band Boosters organization. Any and all band parents are encouraged to join. The Band Boosters work tirelessly to provide enriching events and opportunities for our band students grades 6-12 via fundraising and volunteer opportunities.
